Perry was born in Chicago to the actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. The character Jackie Harris was played by her mother in each of the two shows she starred in on Roseanne. The actress did not go on to pursue acting as a career until after she had reached adulthood because her parents were worried about the detrimental consequences stress can have. Perry claimed that she was too timid to perform during high school, but started acting at Northwestern University as a way to meet new people after she transferred from Boston University. Perry began her career as an actress in New York after graduation, landing minor role on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, the feeling of homelessness made Perry go back to California and pursue a career as a stage actress. In 2013, she was a part of The Other Place on Broadway alongside her mother. The show was directed by Eugene O'Neill. Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie as well as Kevin McKidd. This was presented at West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry appeared in 9 episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. Her father played her on The ABC drama Scandal. She also played her younger Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon which was a CBS spin-off from The Big Bang Theory. The part was offered to her through audition, despite the fact that she was a cousin to the character.
